Caring for Outdoor Wood in New England Weather

How to care for outdoor wooden benches, planters, and trellises through New England seasons—lumber choices, finishes, and maintenance tips from Brookside Farm.

New England asks a lot of outdoor wood: nor’easters, humid Julys, and freeze-thaw spells that work at every joint. Brookside Farm builds planters, trellises, and furniture for that reality—using galvanized fasteners, waterproof glue, and lumber suited to exposure. A little seasonal care helps each piece last even longer.

Know what you bought

Pressure-treated lumber resists rot and insects and is common in our trellises and many planters. Kiln-dried lumber is stable and finish-friendly but usually needs a protective coating outdoors. Cedar offers natural durability at a premium, available on select garden benches. Matching care to material matters more than any single product.

Finishes and sealers

Many of our outdoor pieces ship unfinished so you can stain or seal to match your home. A breathable exterior stain or clear sealer slows UV graying and moisture cycling. Revisit finishes every year or two on horizontal surfaces like bench seats that see standing water and sun.

Seasonal checklist

Spring: rinse grit, check fasteners, touch up finish before heavy use.
Summer: avoid constant soil piled against untreated edges; ensure planter drainage works.
Fall: empty annual containers you will store; brush leaves out of joints.
Winter: keep benches clear of deep wet snow piles when practical; elevate planters if ice dams soak a porch.

Furniture built for real weather

When to repair or replace

Tighten loose hardware early. Soft, dark wood at ground contact may signal advanced decay—especially on untreated pieces left in constant mud.
